FAQ
Setting Haibane Memories Application Miscellaneous Answers to player questions Be sure to read the setting info page in addition to the FAQ here. Where can my character live? - All characters will live at one of the available Haibane nests. There are currently two available, and more will be discovered as time passes. See the housing page for more details. What do the NPCs do? - Important NPCs (as listed on the NPC page, they will typically have their own journal) will play a major role in certain parts of the game. All other NPCs (who will typically share one NPC journal) are mostly there to serve as background characters. The friendly shopkeeper, the kids playing at the park, the NPC-Haibane who live at the various nests, and so forth. Any non-Important NPC can be played by players currently in the game, for the purposes of moving a thread along. Important NPCs are only played by the mods. How do the NPCs treat the Haibane? - All human NPCs treat the Haibane with respect and kindness, though there is a very clear divide between how Haibane are treated and how humans are treated. It's not so much that one is treated better than the other, just different. The Haibane rules have a lot to do with that. Haibane NPCs are very friendly to other Haibane, though they are closest to Haibane from their own nest. Haibane NPCs from the Abandoned Factory can be standoffish with the Haibane NPCs from Old Home, but relations between the two groups seem to be improving. What is the tech level like? - Barring a few odd exceptions, the tech level of Glie seems to be at about 1930s Europe-ish. So, indoor electricity and radios and such, but no computers or televisions. Additionally, electricity itself can be spotty at times, so all homes also have candles and gas lamps. The stoves and ovens are gas-burning, and the fridges run on power. Can I explore areas that aren't listed on the setting page? - Of course! Just be aware that important details about certain locations won't be released until a later time, so your characters will not necessarily find out all the details of a location upon their first visit. What is the weather like? - The city of Glie has four official seasons, though fall is quite short compared to the others, and winter is quite long. Winters can get very cold as well, and it is considered a struggle to last through the long, cold months. Spring is cool but pleasant, and summer is comfortably warm. At the end of summer, just before it starts to get cold, there is a rainy season. What are Haibane? - Haibane are beings that were brought to Glie via a cocoon, which they hatch from after a short incubation time. Haibane are 'born' into the world fully-grown, and do not age from the moment they hatch. Some appear to be children, others adults. All Haibane have two identifying features: a set of small, charcoal-grey wings on their backs, and a golden halo above their head. TO see an example of a Haibane, click on this link here. Initially Haibane come out of their cocoon looking like a normal human, but within 12 hours their wings sprout out of their back and they are given a halo. Is my character a Haibane? - Yes. Barring a few special cases, all characters apped into the game are Haibane. Meaning everyone gets wings and a halo upon entry. Do Haibane have any memories from before arriving in Glie? - At the start, just two: their cocoon dream, and their given name. They will eventually regain a few, fragmented memories of their previous lives, but they will never fully regain all of their memories from before arriving in Glie. To find out more about the memories, see the memories section below. What is the cocoon dream? - It is a dream that the Haibane have while still in their cocoon. It is their only memory, besides their name, that they bring with them when they hatch into this world. The cocoon dream is meant to give the Haibane a hint towards their trial. It doesn't spell it out for them, but rather gives them a very abstract vision that might help them figure out what they need to do. For example, someone whose trial is "learn to trust and accept others" might have a cocoon dream about being alone, or perhaps of being in a crowded room yet feeling like they are alone. What about the name? - In the anime "Haibane Renmei", a Haibane does not remember their name. Once they are out of their cocoon, they are given a name based on something from their dream. We are going to be altering this slightly, so that the name is given to the Haibane while they are still in their cocoon. It is the other thing they remember, along with their cocoon dream. However, the name they are given in the cocoon does not feel entirely right. Haibanes will recognize their given name as their name, but it will feel a little 'off', like it is an assumed name. The name a Haibane is given in-game is not their real name. However, it is related to their real name. See the app FAQ page for more information on names. Why are Haibane here in Glie? - Nobody seems to have the answer for that. Haibane appear and disappear all the time with no real rhyme or reason, so the citizens of Glie have decided to allow the Haibane to live in within the walls of the city for as long as they need to. In exchange, Haibane have to follow a handful of rules. Haibane are the lost souls of individuals who died with unfinished business. They were brought to Glie to get a second chance at fulfilling that business and learning to accept their faults. This "unfinished business" could be a regret they carry, or a character flaw they need to overcome to become a better person. During their time in Glie, all Haibane are given a chance to grow and learn, and to hopefully be able to pass on to the next life without any regrets. Upon entry, all Haibane are given a 'trial' they must complete. This trial is not specifically spoken to the Haibane, but they will feel an innate need to do tasks that are related to that trial. IE if someone died with the regret "I wish I had told my spouse 'I love you' one last time", then they will feel particularly drawn towards other people and forming positive relationships with them. Or, if their character flaw is that they are too proud to ask for help, then they would be driven to take on way too much work in order to put themselves in a position where they would need to ask for help to finish it all. The Haibane themselves will not understand those strange callings, and they might not even be aware of it at all. It is a subconscious effort on their part to fix whatever it is about themselves that they need fixing in order to peacefully pass on. At no time, barring special circumstances (in which case the mods will contact those players privately), should the characters be aware that they are facing a trial. As far as they know, they just suddenly showed up in this city and are expected to work for the city for as long as they live there. What happens to Haibane that do not complete their trial? - That will be revealed at a later time, if there are any Haibane present that fit the requirements, the first of which is being sin-bound. It takes either several months of purposefully avoiding their calling, or a particularly traumatic moment that throws them into despair, for a Haibane to risk becoming sin-bound. What are the rules that a Haibane must follow? 1: Haibane can neither touch nor pass beyond the walls of Glie. 2: Haibane can only live in places that have been abandoned by humans. 3: Haibane must work for the town of Glie in some way or another. 4: Haibane are forbidden from handling money, and can only use their ledgers for purchases. 5: Haibane can only wear used clothing. 6: In addition to these rules, Haibane must follow the rules of their specific nest. (these rules can be found on the housing page) (All of the information in this section is OOC knowledge only. Characters will not know the mechanics behind memory regains ICly.) What happened to the Haibane's memories? - All characters lose their memories upon entry to the game. However, certain memories will be regained over time. How are memories regained? - Every month in which you complete AC, you will be given the option to regain a memory. Additionally, memories will be given out at times based on events within the game. Memories must be chosen from a character's memory bank. Memory bank? - Every character must have a memory bank to be accepted into the game. How this is structured is up to you, but there must be at least twenty memories in the memory bank, as well as some indication as to which ones have been regained in-game and which ones have not yet been regained. All entries to the memory bank must have two parts: a one-sentence description of the memory that will serve as the 'title', and a one-paragraph description of what happens in the memory. You do not have to have all twenty memories written out prior to the start of the game, but each memory must be written out in the memory bank before it can be regained. What are the memories like? - Very fragmented, and not easy to understand. There should be no recognizable names or faces in any of the memories. The memories should focus more on a feeling or an important lesson, something that will help the character with their trial. What is the point of the memories? - The memories serve two purposes. One, for a character to regain any special skills or abilities, they must gain the memory associated with that skill or ability. It is the only way to regain powers. The second purpose is to help the character overcome their trial. The memories are meant to be guidance, to show characters key parts of themselves, in order to facilitate character development. Will my character eventually remember everything from home? - No. They will regain a few fragmented memories, but they will never fully remember who they used to be. Can my character remember that they died? - Yes, but the memory must be left ambiguous, so they are not sure if they died or not. For all questions about the application or reserves, please go to this page right here. Do I have to watch "Haibane Renmei" before apping into this game? - Not at all! All of the information you need to play here is provided on these info pages, so you can app into this game without having seen the show. Plus, we are changing some things around for the sake of making it easier to play in this game, so it is not 100% true to the anime in the first place. Is there a network? - No. At this time, there are no communicators, and no network. Characters will use the main comm at ![]() How do languages work here? - Characters will be able to speak and read the language of Glie upon arrival. They will also retain any knowledge they have of other languages, but the language of Glie will come to them naturally, as if they have spoken it all of their lives. Unless they are focusing intently on speaking something else, they will naturally speak in the language of Glie. Can characters die? - Technically, yes. However, they will wake up in their bed within an hour of dying. Additionally, if a Haibane is responsible for killing someone, they will be severely punished for it. Is there a main plot to this game? - There is, but it is a very relaxed one. Part of the plot of the game is finding out about the Haibane and the Haibane Renmei, and how they are connected to each other. However, the main focus of this game is character development. Ideally everyone should be working to develop their characters to the point where they complete their trial and achieve their Day of Flight. What genre is this game? - Slice of Life, with a bit of fantasy mixed in. Can I app a character who has been here before? - It depends. If a character was dropped or swept in AC, then yes, you can app them. However, if a character completed their trial and reached their Day of Flight, they are considered to have reached their "good end" and are no longer available to be apped. I heard that characters will be receiving memories? - Yes. Over time, certain bits of memories will return to the characters. Generally speaking, they will get about one new memory a month. The memories will be very fragmented and contain no names or identifying features. A character might remember a time they had a fight with a friend, and as a result they stopped being friends with that person, but they will not remember who that friend is (or what they look like, even) or the specifics of the fight itself. How many memories can a character regain? - It depends on how big their memory bank is. We require a minimum of 20 memories in the memory bank, and all characters will receive their true name as their final memory, so that is a minimum of 21 memories. There is currently no upper limit on the number of memories a character can regain, so long as 75% of the memories come from canon. Are HMDs required? - You must have at least one way for someone to contact you for crit. You can put up a personal HMD post, have a journal that can be PMed, or comment to the monthly game HMD post. You may choose whichever of these you like, but you are required to have at least one avenue open. When/how do I intro my character? - Barring special events, such as the opening of the game, every character can enter the game as soon as their app is accepted and their journal is accepted to the comms. If you want to thread out any part of a Haibane's initial arrival (hatching from a cocoon, growing wings, gaining a halo, etc.), that should be done in private threads first. That is not required to be played out though, and can be handwaved. Your actual intro post should be some time shortly after that, possibly as soon as the day after. If you have any questions that are not answered in this FAQ, please ask them below. |

1) This is probably just because the job offer page isn't up yet but would children also be expected to have a job?
2) I know they can get powers back from memories but can they also remember things and... not get them back? Like, Sunako is a vampire and her trial is going to be heavily influenced by that and so will her memories. Can she remember doing things like killing people, drinking blood, and being weak to sunlight without regaining those perks and limitations? I would want her to stay as a human/haibane in game.

2: Powers are completely optional. If you would like to have her regain those memories but not regain her powers, then that would be fine.

1) i'm interested in apping conan edogawa from detective conan who's 5-6 physically but originally 17 years before he was forced to de-age. would he be an able exception to the age cap? to be specific, i want to app him when he's still in child form.
2) when characters arrive at the game do they come with their personality perfectly intact? just like it was before they died? i'm curious about this considering their loss of memory could affect this.
3) also, even with their memory loss, do the characters get to keep their old die hard habits from when they were alive? like since conan loves mystery genre, would he still find himself drawn to it if he ever stumbled upon some books? or since he always finds himself deducing people from viewing their actions, would he still do this habitually even without his memories?
4) connected to question 3: if characters don't have powers but have natural abilities like playing sports/instruments (including conan's detective deduction skills), are these considered a part of the "ability gain" mechanic as well?
5) and this is a really weird question, but would he still arrive in the game with his glasses? they're not prescription, and is actually a special tracking gadget a professor made for him. i'm assuming this would be modified to normal glasses in game?
this is so much to ask im so sorry

2) Personalities should be mostly, if not entirely, intact. If someone can demonstrate that a lack of certain memories would affect how their character acts (we were thinking of Light from Death Note specifically, who does go through a period of memory loss in canon and acts differently because of it), we will give them some leeway. But even with minor changes because of a lack of memories, characters should still act like they do in canon, for the most part.
3) In the case you specifically mentioned, Conan would have to either stumble across mystery novels in the library or regain a memory related to mysteries to specifically search out mysteries. As for specific actions, he could find himself doing those same actions without realizing it, if it is a habit he has in canon.
4) We discussed this, and we decided that natural abilities would be split into two groups. If it is a natural ability but still falls into what an average human could possibly do (IE if someone likes to cook a lot, but is just an average or above-average chef), then they would keep those skills from the start. But, if the talent is something that they are exceptionally good at (Think 'best in the world' or 'in the top ten' level of talented), then they would need to regain a memory to have that level of talent in that skill.
5) Characters who normally wear glasses would not come into the game with their glasses. They would need to find a pair of glasses at the second-hand shop to wear.

and yes! even when de-aged conan still retains his 17 year old mind and mentality and all of his memories are still intact.

My question is, does your character absolutely have to make forward, positive progress for AC threads? I see that being sin-bound is a potential option and that it's definitely possible for things to throw your character off or set them back, but I was wondering if those negative threads would still count as character development.
Sorry if this has been addressed somewhere and I missed it! This game looks really neat!
no subject
But you are right, if someone wants to progress their character towards being sin-bound, then threads that show that would count for AC as well.

Currently the character limit is 5 characters, and you can only app one every two weeks (after the game opening, where apps will be open all the time).

Is he unapplicable?
(It might have been a whole year in-universe since he began his journey, but the Pokemon anime operates on a sort of comic book time... seasons change, time passes, but characters never officially age, even if their voices or appearances change).
no subject
If you can provide proof that your character has substantial character flaws that cannot be explained away by his age (IE: things like 'being selfish' or 'has trouble talking with new people' would not be acceptable unless they were above and beyond what is considered 'normal' for a small child), then you would be able to play him here.
no subject
Oh, no, he's definitely got major flaws (of the condoning the use of
-- things I should save for an app, why did I think it was necessary to say all that here... just woke up, sorry! ^^;;;a soul-devouring Ghost Typeviolence against an enemy and disrupting peaceful negotiations because he's too cynical to believe they'd work, being a backstabbing little manipulator, and generally having a really poor grasp of morality because he essentially says justice doesn't make sense to him aaaand while that incident's been dealt with, the source of it all is still there: he made a conscious decision years ago to repress emotions/shun forming bonds because he believes they get in the way of personal growth and his all important goal of becoming Strong).Even at the very end of his storyline, he still enjoys being cruel a little too much (he blushes watching his now-friendly rival's Pokemon being beaten and suffocated) + when asked if he's living up to his own Pokemon partner's love for him, he says he's beginning to.
So his development there is incomplete. He has a cruel streak, questionable morality, and is only beginning to break out of his own self-imposed isolation that led to all these major flaws. I think a game like this would be very suitable for getting him to really connect with others and respect life more.
Bonus question (I know, I took a lot of your time, so sorry!) I'd imagine that'd be the case, considering the significance and nature of Glie's birds/crows in canon, but just to be certain, Pokemon cannot accompany their trainers here, correct?

Also, if a character would quickly grow disinterested with jobs, despite doing them efficiently, would it be acceptable for them to change occupations? Frequently, even, until they find what they'd feel suits them best?
no subject
2: ICly this is perfectly fine, though OOCly we ask that you limit it to one job change a month.

In the memory section, you write, "Also, no names or clear faces should be present within the memories. For example your character can remember that they are a parent, but they cannot remember what their kids look like, or what their names are."
Does this mean that canon-mates will never be able to realize their relationship to each other? I'm interested in bringing in an OC from a completed roleplay, and she has "canon-mates" who might also be interested in the game, so, whatever the response, I just want to make sure my expectations are in the right place.
Thank you in advance!
no subject
That said, it would be possible for canonmates to eventually piece together the fact that they knew each other prior to arriving in Glie, if they compared their memories and noticed similarities in setting/events. It would just take some time and development to reach that point.
